A couple years ago, I joined my Husband’s March Madness group. I have no interest in college basketball, in fact, I have no idea who is #1 in the nation right now. So I based my bracket on which mascot was cuter or better looking. In the end, I was in the top 5.
I may have won.
My point is that I judged these teams by how their mascot looked. I didn’t research their teams, if they were doing well, who was injured, or who was predicted to make it to the Final Four or the Final. I looked at their mascot and made my decision.
Have you ever made a decision just by looking a product and concluding that the said product was good enough due to how it looked? Did you know if it was safe?

In the food industry, one of the aspects that draw consumers is if it is gluten free, made natural, or organic. With health conditions on the rise, more people are determined to eat healthier and they assume by eating foods that are marketed as natural or organic, they are heading down the healthy road. It’s like ordering a Diet Coke while eating a cheeseburger and fries.
In the cosmetic industry, “natural” and “organic” doesn’t mean much. Just like “fragrance,” these words are not defined and can be used as labels. However, the National Organic Program (NOP) sets the U.S. federal standards for the management and enforcement of all USDA-certified organic products. Another point to ponder about is that some cosmetic companies use known carcinogens as safe because they are used in small amounts.
So how do we know if something is safe to use? Some companies market their products as safe, but at Beautycounter we prefer to use the word “safer” because it is the truth. With so many chemicals in the industry, so many are understudied so it is difficult to say if something causes harm. At Beautycounter, we meticulously pick our ingredients in accordance with our mission, to get safer products into the hands of everyone. Our selection process is 5 steps: 1) Ban Intentionally. 2) Screen Rigorously. 3) Learn Constantly. 4) Source Responsibly. 5) Share Transparently.
