Truth: I have been packed and hospital ready since week 34. You never know when you’re going to go into labor, so I like to prepare for the unknown. You don’t always have control of when things will happen, but I can have control of what I pack and be ready.
I thought I was pretty prepared for my first child birthing experiencing. There were a couple things I needed my hubby to grab from home, other than that, I had everything I needed. I also think it’s important to note what the hospital has in stock.
Here is what I packed! (Links not sponsored)
- Robe and Maternity/Nursing Gown: You can get some pretty cute patterns from just about anywhere. I personally love BabyBeMine and have the Mae pattern. It’s a good gender neutral option since I am Team Green! I only wore this in postpartum. I don’t recommend any cute patterns during labor, because labor is war.
- Nursing tank tops and bras: Essential if you plan to breastfeed!
- Comfy bottoms: I got these cute and super soft PJ pants from Amazon! I also have a second pair of leggings, just in case!
- Comfy, Cute, Non-Skid Slippers: I would wear the hospital provided non-skid socks during labor and a few hours postpartum. Once you feel like you’re almost put back together, slip into something more comfy. I have these from Amazon.
- Flip flops: Because I don’t recommend taking a shower barefoot.
- Essential undergarments
- Bath Towel: The hospital will provide you all the towels you need, but sometimes having something that smells like home will feel relaxing.
- Toiletries : makeup, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotion, hair brush, contact solution, glasses. KEY ITEMS to pack: lotion and lip balm, because the hospital is SOO dry! I lost my lipbalm during labor and was suffering during postpartum. I sent my hubby out to find chapstick…and a smoothie. (If he’s going out, might as well pass by Smoothie King!)
That is all in my bag. I also have a diaper bag for the baby and a bag with my pump. I got a new breast pump for this pregnancy and I’m hoping the lactation consultant can help me figure it out. I’m also hoping I’ll be more successful breastfeeding this time around.
Extra Items to Consider
- Pillows – These are a hot commodity on a labor and delivery floor. So I would consider bringing a couple pillows. You can buy cheap ones from Target.
- Extra bags – To carry all the extra stuff you accumulate.
- Snacks – Because being hungry is a human response and your hospital may or may not have a nourishment room.
Do you have any essential items that you pack for the hospital?
