I have never heard of a cover letter until I walked into the career center. I was like, why would I need a cover letter? Isn’t a resumé enough to send in?
No! A cover letter shows that you made an effort write about how that company is a perfect fit for you and ultimately, how the company will be better with you joining the team. The cover letter is evidence that you researched the company and you formally acknowledge the achievements they have made. This is you reaching out and saying, “Great job on your recent project” and then saying “I have exquisite skills in graphic design that will make your next project reach thousands of viewers.” That is what a cover letter does, it bridges the company and you to form one.
Don’t know how to write a cover letter? Girl, I gotchu. You know that. I have a plug and chug you can use.
- Use the same letter head from your resumé. Place the date on the upper left corner.
- Before putting the company’s address, place an “Attn:” the line before the company’s name. It is safe to put “Hiring Manager” or “Human Resources.” Even better if your know who will be conducting your interview.
- Hit Enter once, then type “RE: job position you are applying for.” This keeps it nice and organized, especially for HR to be reminded what position you are requesting to be considered for. If there is a Job ID attached, include it after the job title.
- Hit Enter once, then begin you letter. See sample letter below to you help with the rest.
