This winter my lips have been beat. Possibly by the weather and dehydration. Because I’m pregnant, I require more water than the average non-pregnant body or nursing body! By November, my lips were burning so bad my usual lip balm was not cutting it. I used different types of lip balm and it seemed like nothing was working. I needed something immediate because I couldn’t take how uncomfortable it was. I wanted to rip my lips out, it was soo bad! So I did what any normal millennial would do and asked Dr. Google. The nurse in me is cringing but we all do it!
I googled for something that I can find my kitchen. Coconut oil only helped for an hour before my lips starting tingling again. I later found a DIY lip scrub meant to get the dead cells off, make lips smooth, and hopefully restore more hydration. Yes, please! The great thing about it is that it only includes two ingredients readily found in my kitchen! Honey and sugar!!
Honey Sugar Lip Scrub
I used equal parts honey and sugar and mixed until incorporated. Used my finger to apply to my lips, including the outer edges. Then I let it sit for about 10 minutes before wiping off with a warm towel. Voila! It was like my lips were almost restored. I made it a point to keep drinking water and always making sure my water bottle is within reach.
Honey is an antimicrobial and easily accessible at any grocery store. Sugar, not only tastes ah-mazing, but is also available at any grocery store and works as a natural scrub. Think of think scrub has a little spa for your pout!
I ended up using Carmax for a few days for it’s soothing effects before switching to aquafor and vaseline. I make sure I always have one of these near by, especially on my nightstand before I go to bed. It’s gotten so bad, I get anxious without it once the tingling starts!
How to Avoid Chapped Lips
- Drink Water
- Use Lip Balm with SPF
- Use a humidifier
- Exfoliate your dry lips
- Apply lip balm before bed, including your outer lip line
What Not to Do
- Lick your lips
- Use old/expired lipstick
- Pick your lips
- Use minty (menthol) gum/lip balm
It’s no secret that drinking water is a key factor to being healthy. It’s something I always tell parents. Sometimes I don’t follow my own advice, because its hard to remember to keep drinking water, especially when Diet Coke sounds like a better option. So here’s the tea, drink water. A chapped pout is not a happy one. Now go to Target and find yourself the cutest water bottle. I’m even a fan of those water jugs! Don’t be shameful, it’s time to take care of you!
Here’s to you, mama. Get those lips in check this winter!
