When models go on a “go-see” they bring a portfolio of their best head shots and publications to show prospective agencies their talent. In the professional world, some people bring a portfolio of designs they have done, whether it be fashion, industrial design, or education. It is a folder that holds your talent.
Bringing a portfolio to any interview is a genius idea, so much that I started doing when I interviewed. In healthcare? What do you bring?

Go to an office store and get a clear view folder or a proposal folder. Invest in a nice one. I know folders can be as cheap as 10 cents, but go ahead and splurge on the $3. I like to get the clear view so you can see what is inside and place my resumé in that spot. So it is seen when you close the folder. Inside I put copies of my certifications on one side: CPR/AED for healthcare provider, ALCS, PALs, etc. On the other side, I put a copy of my cover letter, a copy of references with their contact information, and a copy of my college degree (sometimes the HR department will want one.)
If you are non-healthcare, maybe you can place documentation of awards or special certifications that pertain to your career.

Regardless of what career industry, you should always have these copies in your portfolio:
Resumé
Cover Letter
References
Having these important pieces are crucial.
